Music ministries

“When in our music God is glorified...” These words from the 20th-century Methodist minister and hymn writer Fred Pratt Green epitomize St. Stephen’s views on music in the church. With a long history of outstanding music, featuring various styles and mediums, St. Stephen’s is a church that offers something for everyone and is passionate about music. The choirs and instrumentalists enrich worship and participate in special musical services.

The following opportunities are available for anyone interested in participating in St. Stephen's Music Ministries. All are welcome!

  • Adult choir

The adult choir rehearses each Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The choir helps to lead morning worship at both the 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Sunday morning services. The choir also prepares a series of anthems to help lead a service of Lessons and Carols during Advent and a Tenebrae service on Good Friday. In the fall, the choir picks a theme and performs a fun concert of secular music!

  • Handbell choirs

Fellowship of the Ringers and Ring for Joy, our two youth/adult handbell choirs, provide music for Sunday services periodically and also participate in a variety of services and/or concerts during Advent. They are also an important part of our Easter celebration. Ring for Joy rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Fellowship of the Ringers rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m.

  • Children's music

Children play a vital role in the music ministry of our church. During Sunday School, they participate in a special music time where they learn new songs while also playing instruments and games! The children sing during our second service periodically throughout the year and also on Palm Sunday. We also have the Rainbow Ringers handbell choir designed to teach children in grades 3rd - 6th how to read rhythms and notes through the use of handbells and handchimes. We meet for about 12 weeks in the fall and 12 weeks in the spring on Sunday evenings from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. We play music games to learn to read rhythms and notes, and ring a variety of music with the goal of playing at a church service at the end of each 12-week session.

  • instrumentalists

Throughout the year we enjoy adding instrumental solos and ensembles to the worship services and we often have a need for instrumentalists to accompany the choir or bell choir on one of their anthems. We also need a substitute pianist from time to time. If you play an instrument, we’d love to get you involved!

No matter your level of expertise, we invite you to join us. All are welcome! For more information about the Music Ministries program, contact the church office at (405) 321-4988 or email music@ststephensnorman.org.

Performing the Hallelujah Chorus is an annual tradition for Easter at St. Stephen's.

Anyone is welcome to join the choir for this special Holy week performance.
